No-Sweets No Fun Right Now

Well, it’s day seven of no sweets and it’s not going so great.

Don’t get me wrong…I haven’t had any desserts or sweets since last Wednesday night, but it’s been causing all kinds of havoc in my eating none the less. argh.
Last weekend I found myself eating bites of pasta and pizza so much that I was up on Monday, but a bit. It’s like there is this craving that I’m not allowing myself to satisfy so I’m filling up on everything else hoping for it to go away.
Frustrating and weird all at the same time. I did not expect this to happen at all.
So, I’m doing some thinking and asking questions of my weigh-loss journey peers (the pros who have maintained their weight losses for a while now) to decide whether or not I’ll be continuing this for a whole month.
I don’t want to back out of a commitment, but I also don’t want this no-sweets thing to backfire on my efforts. I was losing in December (prior to 5.5 gain week) and still having one treat a day, because I fit it into my calorie budget. So, this is frustrating me.
Anyway, that’s where that lovely idea is right now. I’ll be sticking to it until further notice and I’ll keep you posted on what I learn in the process. Fun or not. šŸ™‚

    I know what you mean about trying to cut out the sweets but having that craving over take you. I find if I give myself a little something healthy sweet, it does the trick without triggering that 'gotta have more sweet'. One of the best ways for me is a smoothie (1/2 banana, 1/2 cup frozen blueberries, 2 T. greek yogurt or milk, 1/2 cup raw spinach). It makes a thick sweet shake that totally fills me up. Actually I think bananas are the one thing that satisfies my sweet tooth without triggering more. My hubby is trying to quit smoking and found werthers originals carmel coffee to take the edge off (and now I have found them too for when I'm wanting something sweet lol). They arent over sweet and leave me satisfied.

    Have you tried Vitatops? I had been eating their chocolate muffin tops for 6-9 months as part of my afternoon snack – under the old WW they were 1 point but now they are 3, which is the whole point value of my snack – but at 100 calories they gave me enough of a chocolate fix so I didn't eat sweets that much (but again sweets isn't really my issue as much). It seems like you are feeling deprived by not having the sweets and deprivation usually doesn't have good results long-term.

    As for sugar cravings…oye, I wish I had an answer for you! I am a total sugar freak. I do find, however, that the more fresh fruit I try to eat (berries, clementines, bananas) the more I'm able to shut that voice up. I've also done a homemade sorbet – take some frozen berries, plain or vanilla greek yogurt (one container), some ice, and a little sweetener (I usually use agave nectar, but splenda works too) and mix up. It can usually do the trick. šŸ™‚

    Hi Honey… you might try having a pre-packaged sugar free pudding. That's what I do and it seems to really work and is quite satisfying. I haven't read the other comments so if I'm repeating someone, oops! love you, lots! Yo MOMa


  7. You can do this, Leah! I've admired your endurance for a year-ish now and know you have it in you!

    I know the feeling of wanting to quit all so well. I have a personal-trainer friend with a program “Eating for Your Soul.” Here's a link to a link:

    I'm not suggesting you trade in what you are doing for her program, but maybe she says something that sparks you, again, and gives some umph to your program. One thing she said/suggested in the program that helped me is to get rid of the scale. The scale number messes with my mind and willingness to go on, so I removed it.

    You can do this!

  9. I'm working backwards; now I just read this post (I often do things backwards!). šŸ™‚

    Cravings are terrible but often a signal your body is giving you.

    “I don't want to back out of a commitment, but I also don't want this no-sweets thing to backfire on my efforts. ” — There is no shame in knowing what doesn't work for you and your body (even if that particular method works for others) and revamping the plan. That's how great inventions are perfected, the first (second or thirtieth!) draft rarely is the final working product.

    Another thing in “Eating for Your Soul” that helped me was “I can have whatever I wanted.”
    After decades of thinking this or that is a bad food and I shouldn't have it, I finally gave that notion up. It has been so freeing. I don't binge anymore. Because when I thought I couldn't have it, I wanted it even more. (If you are interested in the workbook, I'll send one to you).
